What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective therapy supported by research, helping many individuals overcome the pain of trauma and other distressing experiences. In my practice, I’m dedicated to guiding you through this healing journey. If you’re located in New Hampshire, Maine, or Florida, I’m here to assist you through virtual therapy. I incorporate online EMDR programs into a comprehensive approach aimed at facilitating your healing and providing relief. This therapy focuses on the emotional effects of past events, helping to lessen the intensity of troubling memories. Unlike conventional talk therapy, EMDR emphasizes reprocessing your memories, experiences, and feelings rather than just discussing the specifics of what occurred. Through an eight-phase, structured process, it engages your brain’s inherent healing capabilities, allowing you to feel more centered and empowered. EMDR Intensives are available for accelerated healing.

Virtual EMDR therapy is effective for a wide range of mental health struggles, including but not limited to:

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or trauma

  • Depression

Hi, I’m Christina

As a therapist specializing in online EMDR therapy, OCD, and trauma, I’ve seen how closely these two areas are intertwined. My personal experiences with both OCD and trauma have shaped my understanding of their complex relationship and the profound impact they can have on mental health.

I’ve noticed that OCD often latches onto painful past experiences, creating a cycle of fear: "If it happened before, it could happen again." For some, living with OCD can feel like a traumatic experience in itself. This overlap means that symptoms of trauma and OCD frequently exacerbate one another, turning what may appear to be isolated issues into a larger, interconnected struggle.

In my practice, I focus on helping individuals navigate the effects of both trauma and OCD. I incorporate evidence-based therapies like EMDR, CBT, ERP, I-CBT, ACT, and somatic work, all delivered with a compassionate approach. My aim is to create a safe and supportive environment where you can explore and address these challenges, helping you find relief and rebuild your sense of well-being and self-trust.

Whether you're grappling with the lasting effects of trauma or the persistent challenges of OCD, I’m here to provide tailored guidance and support for your unique journey. Together, we can work to unravel these complexities and toward healing and growth.

Anxiety and trauma can leave you feeling stuck in survival mode, disconnected from yourself and the present moment. But healing is possible. Let’s work together to cultivate safety within your body and build the resilience needed to face difficult emotions with confidence.

Note: I have completed Basic Training Part 1 & 2 and am currently in training and supervision for EMDR Certification and through Kase & CO.

How does EMDR Therapy Work Virtually?

What sets online EMDR therapy apart from other therapy treatments is its use of bilateral stimulation, which aligns with your brain’s natural processing system, while I support you throughout the process. This method leverages the way your brain handles information, aiding in the reprocessing and integration of traumatic memories in a healthier and more balanced manner.

And yes, EMDR works just as effectively online! Using tools like visual stimulation cues, auditory tones or tapping through secure video sessions, we can recreate the same bilateral stimulation virtually. This way, you can access the benefits of EMDR therapy virtual, from the comfort and privacy of your own space, whether you’re in Florida, Maine or New Hampshire.

What to expect during an online EMDR session?

In a remote EMDR session, you can expect a safe and supportive space where we’ll collaborate to process your traumatic memories. We’ll begin by discussing your background and the specific memories you wish to focus on. Using secure video conferencing, I’ll guide you through the EMDR phases, incorporating bilateral stimulation with visual cues, tapping or auditory tones. Throughout the session, I’ll assist you in managing any emotions that come up, making sure you feel grounded and supported. At the end, we’ll take some time to check in and ensure you’re feeling balanced before we wrap up the session.

Ensuring Effective EMDR Online Sessions

To ensure effective online EMDR treatment, preparation and creating the right therapeutic environment are essential.

First, find a private, quiet space where you won’t be interrupted, with reliable internet and comfortable seating. I also recommend coming prepared with a journal or something to take notes and reflections. I’ll assist you in setting up tools for bilateral stimulation—whether that involves eye movements, tapping, or using apps specifically designed for EMDR virtual therapy.

During the session, aim to be fully present. If you find your emotions becoming overwhelming, please let me know immediately so we can help you feel grounded. After the session, take some time to decompress. The most important factors are being open, flexible, and willing to collaborate, just as you would in an in-person setting—because the effectiveness of EMDR remains strong, even in an online format.

What are the 8 phases of EMDR?

The eight phases of EMDR include:

  1. History and Treatment Planning: We’ll talk through your past experiences and what’s currently impacting you to create a personalized plan in the first session.

  2. Preparation: I’ll teach you stress management and coping tools so you feel equipped to handle anything that comes up.

  3. Assessment: We’ll work together to choose the specific memories and negative beliefs you want to address.

  4. Desensitization: We’ll focus on lowering the intensity of emotions tied to the painful memories.

  5. Installation: We’ll reinforce a positive belief about yourself to replace the negative ones.

  6. Body Scan: We’ll check in with your body to notice if any lingering tension or discomfort remains.

  7. Closure: Each session ends with making sure you feel grounded and balanced before we wrap up.

  8. Reevaluation: At the start of each new session, we’ll review your progress and ensure that the distress around what we worked on is still low.

What to Expect After an Online EMDR Session

After an online EMDR session, it’s normal to feel a mix of emotions. You might feel lighter, like a weight has been lifted, or you could experience fatigue and need some extra rest. EMDR can bring up memories and emotions that your brain continues to process even after the session ends. It’s like your mind is still putting the pieces together.

Give yourself time to decompress—maybe go for a walk, journal, or do something comforting. You might also notice some vivid dreams or additional insights popping up. That’s all part of the process. If anything feels overwhelming or unexpected, just reach out, and we can discuss it during our next session. Take it easy, be gentle with yourself, and let your mind do its thing.
